Improving Your Gum Health

Did you know that periodontal disease is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss?

Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria in plaque build up below an above the gum line, causing an infection of the gum tissue. Taking the proper steps to protect your teeth and gums can minimize your risk of developing complex dental problems in the future.

Stages of Gum Disease

There are multiple stages of gum disease. The mildest form of gum disease is called gingivitis. Gingivitis may cause swollen, red, and easily bleeding gums; some patients may not exhibit any noticeable symptoms during this stage of gum disease. However, it is imperative that patients visit the dentist regularly for gum disease screening. When gum disease is caught during the gingivitis stage, your dentist may be able to reverse it with a through at home oral hygiene plan and/or in office dental cleanings.

When gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis. Periodontitis is an advanced stage of gum disease. During periodontitis, the gums pull away from the teeth, causing deep pockets to form. The connective tissue and bone that support the teeth begin to deteriorate. Over time the teeth will shift and may eventually fall out.

  • Sores in the mouth
  • Loose, shifting teeth
