It also involves being mindful of habits that can accidentally damage your teeth. Many things that we do on a daily basis can pose a huge risk to our dental health.

Biting on Hard Objects

When you finish a cold drink, you may be tempted to chew the leftover ice. Many people like to eat ice, especially when it is hot outside. But, this can damage your teeth and jaw health. Crunching ice can lead to cracked or chipped teeth. Along with this, hard candy can do the same thing to your teeth. Rather than sucking on a hard candy until it’s completely melted, some people like to crunch the candy. Unfortunately, it can hurt your teeth. 

Additionally, using your teeth to hold objects can damage your teeth. For example, using your mouth to hold objects like pens or pencils can weaken your teeth. 

Aggressive Brushing

Brushing your teeth is crucial to keep your mouth healthy. However, overzealous brushing can do more harm than good. This means that brushing your teeth too hard can wear down your enamel and irritate the gums. Over time, you may be more likely to develop cavities. Additionally, brushing too hard can cause your gums to recede. As a result, you expose more of your tooth root, creating sensitivity. This can also increase your risk of gum disease. 

Instead, you should use a soft-bristle toothbrush. While you brush, use gentle, circular motions. This will help to remove plaque while protecting your teeth and gums. 

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Teeth grinding occurs when you grind or clench your teeth. Most people unconsciously grind their teeth during sleep. This can lead to premature enamel erosion and jaw discomfort. In fact, you can develop TMJ or chronic headaches. 

To alleviate this issue, you can talk to your dentist about a night guard. Wearing a custom night guard can protect your teeth from grinding. As a result, it will minimize its impact. 

Chewing on Non-Food Items

If you bite your nails, you can damage your oral and overall health. Nail biting introduces harmful bacteria into your mouth. This may lead to oral health concerns or illness. Your mouth has a delicate balance of bacteria. If you put your fingers in your mouth, you introduce more bacteria and germs that can make you sick. Additionally, biting your nails can lead to chips or breaks in your teeth. 

Also, you should avoid using your teeth to open bottles or to open packages. It may seem convenient at the moment. But, you can seriously damage your teeth. 

Ignoring Dental Appointments

Many people avoid their routine appointments. Maybe you have dental anxiety, or oral health is not high on your list of priorities. However, it is crucial to make your regular dental checkups. These visits allow your dentist to maintain oral health and address potential problems in their early stages.
